U.S. citizenship through naturalization is acquired by filing an application with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Generally, an applicant for U.S. citizenship must meet the following requirements:
(1) Five years continuous residence (three years if married to a US citizen), of which at least half the time must be spent physically in the United States;
(2) Residence of 90 days in a particular USCIS District prior to filing; and
(3) Good moral character.
The amount of continuous residence and physical presence are extremely important, and applicants must list any trips of 24 hours or more outside the U.S. since obtaining permanent residence.
Applicants will also be tested on their ability to read, write and speak English as well as their knowledge of U.S. history and government at the time of their interview.
